Varsity grapplers fight injuries; place fifth among public schools

Varsity Wrestling

Graduation and injuries plagued the 1977 varsity wrestling team. Under veteran coach Calvin Nomiyama the McKinley grapplers ended up with a respectable 10-4 record placing fifth in the over OIA standings.

The season began with easy victories over Moanalua, 48-12, Kaimuki, 58-15, Kahuku, 47-17, and the new Farrington team, 48-30.

Things went bad as injuries struck the lightweights along with the already inexperienced heavyweights as the Tigers were handed three consecutive losses by Radford, 42-10, Kalani, 31-25 and Kaiser, 46-12. In the Kalani match, the Tigers were forced to take the defeat because they lacked a heavyweight in the unlimited division.

Things went better for the Micks as they swept Waialua, 38-21, Waipahu, 56-13 and Pearl City, 42-25.

Their last loss was to Leilehua, 48-19, in a grueling match held at the student council gymnasium.

The Tigers then went on to win the final three matches to Kailua, 59-2, Castle, 26-1 and Campbell, 36-15.

In the OIA individual matches at McKinley, the Tigers failed to take any OIA Divisional championships. However, 98 pounder Harrison Hayashi managed to place fourth in his weight class.

All but four wrestlers qualified to compete in the state tournament on March 4 and 5 at St. Louis gym.

With the seventh place standing in the individual tournament and a fourth place team standing, the Tigers managed to take fifth place overall in the OIA.
