The Black and Gold 1977

Shooters capture nation's fourth; netters better team standings

Riflery  Tennis

Through hard daily practices the 1977 rifle team became the nation's fourth ROTC region shooting champions. The team was coached by Alan Tokumura, a former member of the distinguished riflery team.

The shooters participated in five different invitational matches at St. Louis, Punahou, Kamehameha, Mid-Pac and the highlight of the rifle team's season, Baldwin on Maui.

Schools the team have competed against include Farrington, Roosevelt, Leilehua, Pearl City, Iolani, Kamehameha, St. Louis, Punahou and Baldwin.

The riflery team took third place overall in the OIA.

Hopes were high as the netters competed in one of their most promising seasons. The outlook was good for at least a second place finish in OIA play.

Posting overall victories over Castle, Kailua, Farrington, Kalaheo and Roosevelt leaves the girls' and boys' teams with 21-4 records and second place behind Kalani.

Daily practices, seasoned returnees and a huge turn out for the team were key factors in achieving their goals.

Coaches Richard Yaginuma and Michael Yamamura worked and drilled with team members for a gratifying season.
