Organizations, Organizations

The Black and Gold 1975

School brought many friends and unforgettable times along with some "enemies and disasters." Not only was school a place to learn, but it was also a place for people to get together for sharing ideas, laughter, and work together to develop special interests.

To provide students with a stimulating and well-organized school year, McKinley's student council and senate members worked hard together with clubs and other organizations.  McKinleyites helped to better the school by actively getting involved in the many different and new activities.

Senate meetings were held every Wednesday. The student council officers and senators visited social studies classes to keep McKinleyites informed on school happenings.

Student oriented interest clubs and organizations kept McKinleyites active in school and within the community. Clubs participated in service projects for worthwhile causes, explored many fields of interest and undertook projects to beautify the school, campus and community.

Special Courses

The Black and Gold 1975

Special Courses Display Flexibility, Versatility for Individual Needs

The Special Education program was designed to help students such as the visually handicapped and others with learning difficulties. Students were trained and assisted academically, socially and vocationally.

In the special ed classes, during the sophomore year, the students were introduced to the courses. Instructors refreshed and reviewed some of the academic lessons learned from the previous years.

In the junior year, the instructors involved the students in the occupational fields; such as carpentry, cashiering, hotel work, building and grand maintenance, auto mechanics, food services, and power sewing.

As seniors, the students were placed in a part-time job, in order to develop some on-the-job experience, so that upon their graduation, they could work on a full-time basis for their present and future security.

Auditorally and visually handicapped students had their own resource rooms and teachers to aid them in their studies in regular classes at McKinley.

In an effort to bridge cultural and language barriers, the TESOL and Americanization programs sought to help foreign students blend into their new surroundings as students of McKinley.

Taking place of a regular English credit, TESOL (Teaching English to Speak to Other Languages) enabled foreign students to pick up basic English skills.

Americanization, a newly developed program worked toward adjusting non-native speakers at McKinley to the American culture in its Hawaiian setting.

Rounding out the academic curriculum were the school service, study hall and off campus "classes".

School service enabled students to provide vital services to the school while obtaining credits. For those students who needed a free period to catch up on their studies, study hall provided a necessary non-credit outlet. Other students who had part time jobs, had the option of taking off campus in order to meet the situation.

Popular Vocational Oriented Courses

The Black and Gold 1975

Popular Vocation Oriented Courses Build Useful Skills, Knowledge

Emphasizing practical and vocational skills, the Business Education, Industrial Arts and Home Economics departments proved to be popular electives with the students.

In an effort to modernize the Business department, 20 new electric typewriters were purchased for the typing classes, replacing the older and outdated manual models.

In addition to typing, other electives offered were data processing, accounting, shorthand, office practice, business machines, and cooperative business education.

A new change this year saw the agricultural technology classes incorporated into the industrial arts department.
Further accommodations were made for girls interested in auto shop, introducing special (all girl) classes, for the first time.
Other shop courses offered included wood, metal, electronics, drafting, and graphic arts.

The Home Economics Department was designed to give girls and boys basic knowledge of modern family living. Students explored the various aspects of child care, family clothings, and food service. Personality and dress was also offered to students who wished to learn more about poise and beauty.

One of the more popular Home Economic courses was Family Foods. Here students learned about proper nutrition and diet.

Diversified Electives

The Black and Gold 1975

Diversified Electives Allow for Varied Individual Interests

Creativity and personal expression were necessary components to an aspiring young artist. With this in mind the Art department was designed to give students an enjoyment of the art world.

Art students were also encouraged to enter the prestigious National Scholastic Art Contest.

Offered were Basic Art, Ceramics, Weaving and Textile courses, all placing human expression through art as common goals.

Communicating electronic as well as printed information, the Audio-Visual and Publications departments facilitated the distribution of information within the school.

AV students took care of the ditto machines, tape reproductions, photography, laminating and video taping, in addition to working in the multi-purpose auditorium and setting up projectors for classroom use. This type of work gave experience and training for pursuing a career in the audio-visual field.

Qualified students were certified to serve as school projectionists.

The Publications department was involved with the production of both the school yearbook and newspaper.
Working to report news as accurately as possible, students in the Newswriting classes rushed to meet their daily deadlines, while their counterparts in the Yearbook class tried to capture the moods and feelings of the school year in pictures and words.

The foreign language courses gave students the opportunity to become proficient in languages other than their native English.

A booming Japanese tourist industry in addition to a large local population, helped stimulate interest in Conversational Japanese course.

Japanese classes also had the benefit of the new 'Kanji' typewriter, which could type out Japanese characters.
Other foreign language courses included Mandarin, Latin, French and Spanish.
