Diversified Electives

The Black and Gold 1975

Diversified Electives Allow for Varied Individual Interests

Creativity and personal expression were necessary components to an aspiring young artist. With this in mind the Art department was designed to give students an enjoyment of the art world.

Art students were also encouraged to enter the prestigious National Scholastic Art Contest.

Offered were Basic Art, Ceramics, Weaving and Textile courses, all placing human expression through art as common goals.

Communicating electronic as well as printed information, the Audio-Visual and Publications departments facilitated the distribution of information within the school.

AV students took care of the ditto machines, tape reproductions, photography, laminating and video taping, in addition to working in the multi-purpose auditorium and setting up projectors for classroom use. This type of work gave experience and training for pursuing a career in the audio-visual field.

Qualified students were certified to serve as school projectionists.

The Publications department was involved with the production of both the school yearbook and newspaper.
Working to report news as accurately as possible, students in the Newswriting classes rushed to meet their daily deadlines, while their counterparts in the Yearbook class tried to capture the moods and feelings of the school year in pictures and words.

The foreign language courses gave students the opportunity to become proficient in languages other than their native English.

A booming Japanese tourist industry in addition to a large local population, helped stimulate interest in Conversational Japanese course.

Japanese classes also had the benefit of the new 'Kanji' typewriter, which could type out Japanese characters.
Other foreign language courses included Mandarin, Latin, French and Spanish.
