Shooters capture nation's fourth; netters better team standings

Riflery  Tennis

Through hard daily practices the 1977 rifle team became the nation's fourth ROTC region shooting champions. The team was coached by Alan Tokumura, a former member of the distinguished riflery team.

The shooters participated in five different invitational matches at St. Louis, Punahou, Kamehameha, Mid-Pac and the highlight of the rifle team's season, Baldwin on Maui.

Schools the team have competed against include Farrington, Roosevelt, Leilehua, Pearl City, Iolani, Kamehameha, St. Louis, Punahou and Baldwin.

The riflery team took third place overall in the OIA.

Hopes were high as the netters competed in one of their most promising seasons. The outlook was good for at least a second place finish in OIA play.

Posting overall victories over Castle, Kailua, Farrington, Kalaheo and Roosevelt leaves the girls' and boys' teams with 21-4 records and second place behind Kalani.

Daily practices, seasoned returnees and a huge turn out for the team were key factors in achieving their goals.

Coaches Richard Yaginuma and Michael Yamamura worked and drilled with team members for a gratifying season.

Returnees spark jayvee wrestlers to 10-1 second place finish

JayVee Wrestling

Under new coach Wade Isobe, the jayvee wrestlers had one of their finest seasons in OIA competition. The junior matmen managed a second place overall standing in the OIA in 1977.

The season was somewhat an easy one with their only loss to Kaiser 31-18, who placed first in the OIA.

Consecutive victories over Moanalua 60-7, Kaimuki, 37-23, and Radford 44-22 opened the season.

The Tigers then swept Kalani, 40-26 and after the loss to Kaiser, they went on to defeat Waialua 51-21.

The Tigers never saw a loss for the rest of the season as they whipped Waipahu, 51-15, crushed Pearl City 42-22, and walloped Leilehua 58-9.

Wins over Castle, 58-15 and Campbell, 34-25 capped the season.

In the OIA Individuals Tournament the Tigers took fourth place honors as Allan Nagamine and Peni Talamoa placed first in their weight divisions.

Ariel Catalan took second place honors with the Tigers winding up with a 10-1 record and runner-up in the public schools.

Varsity grapplers fight injuries; place fifth among public schools

Varsity Wrestling

Graduation and injuries plagued the 1977 varsity wrestling team. Under veteran coach Calvin Nomiyama the McKinley grapplers ended up with a respectable 10-4 record placing fifth in the over OIA standings.

The season began with easy victories over Moanalua, 48-12, Kaimuki, 58-15, Kahuku, 47-17, and the new Farrington team, 48-30.

Things went bad as injuries struck the lightweights along with the already inexperienced heavyweights as the Tigers were handed three consecutive losses by Radford, 42-10, Kalani, 31-25 and Kaiser, 46-12. In the Kalani match, the Tigers were forced to take the defeat because they lacked a heavyweight in the unlimited division.

Things went better for the Micks as they swept Waialua, 38-21, Waipahu, 56-13 and Pearl City, 42-25.

Their last loss was to Leilehua, 48-19, in a grueling match held at the student council gymnasium.

The Tigers then went on to win the final three matches to Kailua, 59-2, Castle, 26-1 and Campbell, 36-15.

In the OIA individual matches at McKinley, the Tigers failed to take any OIA Divisional championships. However, 98 pounder Harrison Hayashi managed to place fourth in his weight class.

All but four wrestlers qualified to compete in the state tournament on March 4 and 5 at St. Louis gym.

With the seventh place standing in the individual tournament and a fourth place team standing, the Tigers managed to take fifth place overall in the OIA.

Tiger kickers capture fifth OIA; fourth state runner-up honor

Soccer

Winning OIA titles seems to have become a McKinley Soccer Team tradition over the past five
years, but State titles are always beyond its reach as it won its fifth straight OIA crown but lost in its bid for the State title for the fifth year in a row.

A 1-0 win over Kailua opened the season and started a string of nine consecutive wins. The next five victories were over Roosevelt, 5-1, Mililani, 10-0, Pearl City, 4-1, and Moanalua, 7-1.

The next game against Kaiser 4-3 was the closest that any of the previous teams had come to
beating the seemingly unbeatable Mick kickers. Two more solid wins over Kalani, 5-2, and
Farrington, 4-2, sent the Micks on a collision course with Leilehua, in the OIA race.

A win over Leilehua would have clinched the OIA but the two powerhouses battled to a 1-1 stand off. McKinley finished regular season play with a decisive 4-1 win over Castle.

Sporting identical 10-0-1 (won-lost-tied) records, McKinley and Leilehua clashed again for the
OIA title but this time, the Tigers came up victorious over the Mules 3-0.

The Micks entered the State Tourney by beating Konawaena, 4-3 in double overtime, then went on to face Punahou in the finals. The Tigers tried hard but lost a heartbreaking game to the Puns,
2-1, for the second year in a row.

The Black and Gold 1977

Jayvees rate best OIA record ever

Jayvee Basketball

The Jayve hoopsters, under new Head Coach Jacob Hoopai, moved from a 8-6 record last year to a 9-5 record in their best season since 1970.

The season opened with a victory over Kahuku 69-55, and a loss to Kalaheo 55-47. Victories over Farrington 76-51, and Kalani, 42-41, followed before a loss to Roosevelt 48-41. The Cubs ended their first round with a loss to Kaimuki 62-54, and a victory over Kaiser 69-49.

In the second round, the Micks lost the opener to Kailua, 49-37, Castle 60-46, and Kaiser, 61-41.

With the experience of the jayvees, the '77-'78 varsity team should have some good prospects in outstanding players such as Arthur Rosa, Guy Aleka and Wesley Nagao.

They ended the season with a second loss to Roosevelt, 61-58, and a win over Farrington, 71-64 ended the season.

Coach Hoopai throughout the entire season proved that experience was not needed to boast a winning season.

As for the Jayvee, with only a few freshman, it will be another year of rebuilding and hoping for new talent to come along.
