Social and Service Boards

The Black and Gold 1976

Social and Service Boards Coordinate Awareness, Student Activities

Dances, competitions, assemblies and various other class and student council social activities were coordinated by the Social Board. Comprised of a coordinator, social committee chairpersons, and the president and vice-president of each class, the board met regularly to plan and report on the various events.

The year featured events such as Homecoming Week and dance, a successful Fun Nite where students were treated to a fashion presentation and make-up and hairstyling types, many entertaining and educational assemblies, "One Love" Winter Prom at the Ilikai Pacific Ballroom, a crazy time during Crazy Week, May Day pageant, the exciting selection of Miss McKinley to reign over festivities during the school year, and the individual class weeks and proms.

With the emphasis on the Bicentennial, McKinley's students were treated to and participated in several events spearheaded by the S.C. Bicentennial Committee. There was a school-wide parade in January, followed by contests in such categories as pie-eating, kite-flying, singing; even the carnival had a touch of the Bicentennial with pig-calling and naildriving contests.

Formerly the Academic Board, The Student Services Board included several committees which handled student needs.

Renovation of the bookstore and replacing the handbook with a similar guide in the form of a folder, were some of the modifications which helped in serving the constantly diverging needs of the students.

Student Council

The Black and Gold 1976

Student Council Board, Senate Initiate Planning For More Involvement

Early in May of 1975, the new executive board for the 1975-1976 school year started to work and plan for the upcoming year. Six juniors with little or no idea of what they were expected to do, worked industriously to uphold their positions and to construct a closer knit McKinley. With all the changes evident in school, such as the new schedule, constitution and registration procedures, it seemed that the job of running a "different" McKinley would prove be some task.

One major setback that also made success doubtful was the question of an adviser. Not until late August was and adviser appointed. Luckily, the new adviser, Miss Raynette Takizawa, a graduate of McKinley High School, knew a little about student government, so her experience proved to be beneficial in maintaining coherence and organization.

Through all the confusion, the six board members and the new senate president elected in September, matured to a very close knit and competent unit. In their weekly Tuesday night meetings, problems were discussed and much planning of activities such as the carnival were made. This year also saw the start of the coordinating committee which was designed to coordinate the activities of the administration, faculty, students and parents. In addition, the reorganized Parent-Teacher and now, Student Association (PTSA) was started.

The Black and Gold 1976

Consistent with the other aspects of school, McKinley's organizations were very much a part of the bicentennial festivities, which influenced many of their activities.

Many clubs and organizations marched in the campus parade in January to kick-off the year of 1976 and a week's celebration of our country's 200th birthday.

Students were given the opportunity to join various school-based interest groups spanning a myriad of topics - from scuba to homemaking to Christian fellowship. Each group found their own way of participating in the bicentennial celebration...

Physical Ed, JROTC, Specialized Classes Complete Course Offerings

Offering a complete education to McKinley High School students, various courses were geared to special needs and interests. Physical education and JROTC and integration of immigrants and the handicapped into the regular school program took top priority.

The Physical Education Department exposed students to a variety of sports and recreational activities so that they may select leisure time both now and in the future. They gained awareness of their own physical fitness, and through a program geared to individual differences, improvement.

For students who were visually or auditorily handicapped or with learning difficulties, a Special Education program was provided to assist them academically, socially and vocationally.

Offered as regular English credit, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), presented immigrant students a better understanding of the English language by teaching basic language arts skills.

In the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC), a cross-section of students interacted to develop good citizenship, self-reliance, leadership and responsiveness to constituted authority.

In a salute to the Bicentennial, the ROTC Department designed colonial-style uniforms in school colors of black and gold for five color guards who portrayed the colonial soldiers in McKinley's bicentennial parade.

Home Ec, Business Ed

The Black and Gold 1976

Home Ec, Business Ed, Industrial Arts, Agriculture Focus on Vocations, Pleasure

Social Studies classes conducted a survey in the earlier part of the year geared to determine what types of vocations students were interested in. This gave students the opportunity to contemplate their future goals and served as a basis by which they would determine what type of courses to enroll to prepare them for their chosen profession.

Hoping to fill the needs of those interested in entering the business world, students were able to learn typing, accounting, shorthand, Business Machines, Data Processing, Office Practice and cooperative education.

Students desiring experience and skill in Industrial Arts took advantage of the program offering classes in pre-vocational work as well as training of a practical nature. Courses ranging from woods to automotive mechanics allowed students to develop or discover their inventive talents.

Following the latest craze of skateboard riding, woodshop students manufactured their own boards from beginning to end.

Incorporated into the Industrial Arts Department, the agricultural technology classes learned the cultivation and improvement of the environment.

Designed to give students basic knowledge of modern family living, females as well as males enrolled in Home Economics. An awareness of personal and Family Foods, Personality and Dress, Family Clothing and Child Care. Acculturation classes, designed for immigrant students, exposed them to the unique blend of local cultures.
