Language Arts

The Black and Gold 1977

Language Arts, Social Studies make up academic core

Social Studies and Language Arts were required basics, essential for graduation. But each was diversified enough to satiate students' different interests.

Social Studies courses assisted students to become knowledgeable in the social, political, or historical aspects of the world.

A variety of electives were offered besides the required American Studies. These ranged from Psychology, to Environmental Studies to Hawaiiana.

Many field trips were planned, giving students perspectives outside of the confined classroom. Some of the trips were a study of animal behavior by Psychology students at Sea Life Park in November, and an environmental walk studying urban planning by Environmental Studies classes. The movie "Return of a Man Called Horse" which portrayed the plight of the American Indian was viewed at a local theater by the American Studies classes.

The Language Arts department provided students with skills and know-how for them to develop within by offering a variety of courses.

Besides the required sophomore English IV, there were 43 elective courses from which to choose. They ranged from World Literature to Mass Media. Popular courses such as Practical English and Reading Improvement showed marked increase in enrollment this year.

Hard work and extra time necessary for handling of essay contests and scholastic awards paid off as many students who showed off their skills and abilities in English classes by entering the various contests.

Basic writing skills and overall development in reading comprehension as well as literary appreciation were foremost concerns of the Language Arts department.

Classes & Awards

The Black and Gold 1977

Classes - Supplementary activities enrich curriculum

Classroom activities made up the largest part of a typical day for all students at McKinley. As in the previous year, the school utilized an alternating 1-3-5 periods schedule on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 2-4-6 periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with all periods on Fridays.

To enrich or supplement the 90 minutes of class time, teachers improvised different teaching methods. Among them were individual research, group discussions and field trips where learning extended beyond the classroom.

Guest speakers or supplemental visual aids such as films and filmstrips also served as an alternative to the regular classroom lectures.

Offering the largest selection of electives of any high school on Oahu, students could choose fields ranging from Home Economics to Industrial Arts, from Publications to Agricultural Technology; a course was available to suite just about everyone.

Awards - Achievements gain individual recognition

Throughout the school year, members of McKinley's student body won recognition or awards for scholastic and personal achievement.

Ten creative and talented art students won awards in the 1977 Scholastic Art Contest, Hawaii region. Their winning entries were on display at Ala Moana Shopping Center and later competed for national awards in New York.

McKinley's Taikas, a girls' precision drill team, took the second division trophy in the annual Aloha Week parade in October.

Seniors Greg Nishioka and Bart Asato were nominated to represent McKinley in the United States Youth Program. Bart was also selected as one of 20 student moderators for the State Student Conference held in January.

One of 300 seniors in an honor group, Catherine Uyehara was selected for the 36th annual Science Talent Search for the Westinghouse Scholarships and Awards. She was also a first place winner, research division, of the MHS Science Fair.

McKinley's band students were awarded a total of 91 medals in the Solo and Ensembles judging at the University of Hawaii. Individuals and ensembles were evaluated as they competed against other high school band students. The State Select Band in March was composed of the best in each category.

McKinley's thespians captured overall superior ratings in the State Thespian Conference at Kaiser High School. The award of "Most Superior Ratings" was also presented to the group, whose awards included two quadruple superiors, the highest possible achievement.

Other students received recognition for their entries at the Science and Engineering Fair and Industrial Arts Fair where their talents and ingenuity were displayed.

Seniors, Randall Chun and Terence Oi, advanced to the finals of the 1977 National Merit Scholarship program.

Socials & Activity Period

The Black and Gold 1977

Socials - Affairs range from casual to formal

Completing the roster of extra-curricular activities were the socials, which ranged from informal stag or drag banquets to elegant proms at fancy hotels.

The first event of the year was the Junior Class Luau. Juniors feasted on authentic Hawaiian food and enjoyed 'homegrown' entertainment by their classmates.

"Walk Close to Me," the all-school Winter Prom a the Ilikai Hotel's Bora Bora Room began the Christmas holidays on December 20.

As school resumed, the first student council sponsored dance, "You Ought to be Havin' Fun" took place in the gym on January 21. Two other dances were held in conjunction with the annual carnival on February 18 and 19.

But, exclusive class functions were the highlight of the year. The seniors, similar to the class before them, opted for a luau at Sea Life Park, instead of a class banquet, on March 26.
The casual setting gave them the chance to 'hang loose' and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

In contrast, the Class of '79 chose to keep with tradition and celebrated their first banquet "Beautiful" at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The juniors attend their class prom "You and I" in the chic surroundings of the Ilikai Hotel's Pacific Ballroom.

Marketing the last day of school for the graduating Class of 1977, the long awaited senior promenade "Do You Know..." was celebrated at the Princess Kaiulani's Ainahau Ballroom.

Concluding the school year was the traditional annual signing Aloha Dance in the gym which bade farewell to seniors and signalled the end of the school year.

Activity Period -
Personal interests determine pursuits

This year's bell schedule, a modified form of last year's, again allotted time for students to pursue their individual goals.

Activity period, scheduled everyday except Wednesdays, gave McKinleyites 20 minutes to one hour's time to finish up homework, attend weekly or monthly club and class meetings, or take part in specially scheduled assemblies such as commencement or ring ordering for seniors.

Others found a refreshing break between classes and chose to relax -- within the classroom or out on the campus.

Supplementing the activity period was tutorial time on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 45 minutes and on Wednesdays for 25 minutes. Students needing extra help with their work could seek it from teachers at this time.
