Socials & Activity Period

The Black and Gold 1977

Socials - Affairs range from casual to formal

Completing the roster of extra-curricular activities were the socials, which ranged from informal stag or drag banquets to elegant proms at fancy hotels.

The first event of the year was the Junior Class Luau. Juniors feasted on authentic Hawaiian food and enjoyed 'homegrown' entertainment by their classmates.

"Walk Close to Me," the all-school Winter Prom a the Ilikai Hotel's Bora Bora Room began the Christmas holidays on December 20.

As school resumed, the first student council sponsored dance, "You Ought to be Havin' Fun" took place in the gym on January 21. Two other dances were held in conjunction with the annual carnival on February 18 and 19.

But, exclusive class functions were the highlight of the year. The seniors, similar to the class before them, opted for a luau at Sea Life Park, instead of a class banquet, on March 26.
The casual setting gave them the chance to 'hang loose' and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

In contrast, the Class of '79 chose to keep with tradition and celebrated their first banquet "Beautiful" at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The juniors attend their class prom "You and I" in the chic surroundings of the Ilikai Hotel's Pacific Ballroom.

Marketing the last day of school for the graduating Class of 1977, the long awaited senior promenade "Do You Know..." was celebrated at the Princess Kaiulani's Ainahau Ballroom.

Concluding the school year was the traditional annual signing Aloha Dance in the gym which bade farewell to seniors and signalled the end of the school year.

Activity Period -
Personal interests determine pursuits

This year's bell schedule, a modified form of last year's, again allotted time for students to pursue their individual goals.

Activity period, scheduled everyday except Wednesdays, gave McKinleyites 20 minutes to one hour's time to finish up homework, attend weekly or monthly club and class meetings, or take part in specially scheduled assemblies such as commencement or ring ordering for seniors.

Others found a refreshing break between classes and chose to relax -- within the classroom or out on the campus.

Supplementing the activity period was tutorial time on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 45 minutes and on Wednesdays for 25 minutes. Students needing extra help with their work could seek it from teachers at this time.
