Undermanned Yet Determined JV Mat Team Captures Third Place

An undermanned yet determined JV mat team, aced with a company  of sophomores and recruits from feeder schools, underwent a respectable 8-2 season and captured third place in the OIA.

As the season opened, the young grapplers followed the varsity in defeating their first five opponents.
Disappointments struck again with the clash against last year's JV champs, the Radford Rams and another loss to Kaiser, this year's OIA JV crown victors. A triumph over Castle, a close match against Leilehua, and a romp over the Pearl City Chargers concluded the team matches.

Hard work and strenuous practices paid off during the OIA JV Tournament hosted by McKinley on February 20-21.

The Mick matmen placed seven of their competitors in top five positions and one out of the seven copped first place in his respective category.

Varsity Wrestling

The Black and Gold 1976

Varsity Grapplers Rank Second in Overall Standings

Since the past season, the McKinley Wrestling Team began to look forward with great anticipation toward a promising 1976 year. Starting with an experienced group of returnees, the Tiger matmen set out in pursuit of the highly regarded OIA championship.

As expected, the potential of this team began taking form during preseason scrimmages against Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) adversaries St. Louis and Iolani and Maui High School.

Led by tri-captains Bruce Kishimoto, Fred Pfund and Mark Chinen, the grapplers quickly established themselves by dominating over Waipahu and outlasting league contender in a wrestling thriller over Kalani.  McKinley then continued on as they devastated their next five opponents Campbell, Waialua, Kailua, Kaimuki and Kahuku by outscoring them by an average of 52 points. However, their winning rampage ended in the long awaited match against a strong Radford team which proved to be their most formidable bout. Despite this loss, the matmen continued to overcome the remaining four matches in the season, still in contention for the crown.

As the wrestlers entered the OIA tournament, untimely injuries and upsets of team favorites dropped the Tigers from first to second place in the overall team standings. The year concluded with a 10-1 win-loss record, 12 placing in the top eight berths of the OIA and many entering the state tourney.

Rifle Team - Tennis

The Black and Gold 1976

Girl Riflers Tie for First; Boys Take Third

Heavy preseason practice paid off for the McKinley Girls Rifle Team as they shot their way to a tie for first with Farrington at the close of the OIA season. The boys, however, had to settle for third place.

The OIA playoffs were held at Kamehameha High School on February 26, where the girl sharpshooters saw first place slip from their sights and were forced to accept second.

At the annual state wide meet, a mid-season event at Baldwin High on Maui, the team finished a very creditable third.

Coach Alan Tokumura said the rifle team proved to be much better than was expected and had a very eventful season.

Tiger Netters Seek Discipline, Consistency

Discipline and consistency in play would guide the Tiger netters to a most satisfying 1976 season.

A strong girls' team ranked with seniors swept through an undefeated preseason, showing some prospects for the state tournament slated for the Easter vacation. The second doubles team steadily pulled through with much needed triumphs.
With the second-seed transferring to Kaimuki, the promising young male netter lacked enough depth to allow for substitutions.

Resurfacing of the school tennis courts prior to season's start routed daily practices to nearby facilities. Nevertheless, achieving agility and teamwork in the doubles provided the aspects for an exciting six-week schedule.

Soccer

The Black and Gold 1976

Tiger Soccer Team Gains Fourth Consecutive OIA Title

The Varsity Soccer Team kicked their way through an undefeated nine game season.
McKinley’s tough defense yielded goals to only three teams, Farrington, Roosevelt and Leilehua. Farrington scored a useless goal in the final minutes of the game on a fast break. Roosevelt fell to the Tigers, scoring their only goal on a penalty kick.

McKinley met the Mules at Leilehua for the final game of the season. Both teams were undefeated and looking for the OIA Championship. For the first time this season, the Tigers were trailing when the Mules put in a penalty kick halfback Chang Hong bounced McKinley back at the end of the half with a goal to tie the score.

Seung Teak and Chul Sun Park tallied one each for the Tigers in the second half while Leilehua took advantage of two fast breaks to score two goals and ended the game in a tie at three apiece.

McKinley shot through the OIA round robin untouched beating Kailua, 4-0, Kalani, 2-0, and Leilehua, 2-0.

The Tigers had a field day against Konawaena in the state play-offs, romping them, 6-0.

For the state championship, McKinley faced Punahou at Kapiolani field. Punahou was the only team in the state to hold McKinley scoreless, taking the state title, 2-0.

Punahou’s first goal came in the first half, when a Buffanblu player used his head to put it in. Their next goal game in the closing moments of the game on a penalty kick.

The Tigers wound up the season with their fourth consecutive OIA title, and third consecutive state second place.

Swimming - Girls Basketball

The Black and Gold 1976

Lack of Experience Hinders Swimming Team for Year of Rebuilding

The year 1976 was one of rebuilding for McKinley’s swimming team. Hurt by the loss of last year’s seniors with graduation, the team was supported by four returnees, of which only one was a senior.

Joined by new assistant coach Larry Oshiro, from the Honolulu Police Department, the team had daily practices in McKinley’s aging pool after school from 2:15 to 3:45. Practices began in September and continued through March in hope of placing in the OIA swimming meets.

Yet, hard practice and dedication of team members were not enough to give the Mick swimmers a high place in the rankings.

Among the meets were the OIA Relays, the OIA West Championships, the OIA Championships, and the HHSAA State Championship.

Females Concentrate on Cage Skills

Entering their third year of competition and still unsanctioned by the OIA, McKinleys’ Girls’ Basketball Team was comprised of most of the year’s returnees.

New Head Coach Jake Hoopai and Assistant Coaches Joe Tom and Gladys Pakele drilled the girls in various defensive skills and offense techniques, in attempt to overcome a deficit of height.

The season opened with a loss to Kalakaua by 10 points, but the girl cagers came back to take the rematch. From there the team faced tough competition, against defending ILH champion, Maryknoll, Kamehameha and 1975 UH Tournament winner Punahou.

Competitions included the UH Tournament on March 19 t 20 and the Farrington Tournament on April 1 to 3.
