The Black and Gold 1976

Tiger Soccer Team Gains Fourth Consecutive OIA Title

The Varsity Soccer Team kicked their way through an undefeated nine game season.
McKinley’s tough defense yielded goals to only three teams, Farrington, Roosevelt and Leilehua. Farrington scored a useless goal in the final minutes of the game on a fast break. Roosevelt fell to the Tigers, scoring their only goal on a penalty kick.

McKinley met the Mules at Leilehua for the final game of the season. Both teams were undefeated and looking for the OIA Championship. For the first time this season, the Tigers were trailing when the Mules put in a penalty kick halfback Chang Hong bounced McKinley back at the end of the half with a goal to tie the score.

Seung Teak and Chul Sun Park tallied one each for the Tigers in the second half while Leilehua took advantage of two fast breaks to score two goals and ended the game in a tie at three apiece.

McKinley shot through the OIA round robin untouched beating Kailua, 4-0, Kalani, 2-0, and Leilehua, 2-0.

The Tigers had a field day against Konawaena in the state play-offs, romping them, 6-0.

For the state championship, McKinley faced Punahou at Kapiolani field. Punahou was the only team in the state to hold McKinley scoreless, taking the state title, 2-0.

Punahou’s first goal came in the first half, when a Buffanblu player used his head to put it in. Their next goal game in the closing moments of the game on a penalty kick.

The Tigers wound up the season with their fourth consecutive OIA title, and third consecutive state second place.
