Korean, Filipino, Wakai Nakamatachi

The Black and Gold 1977

Social, educational activities further appreciation of cultural heritage

Planning social, service, and education activities, the Korean Club met once a week in the Home Economic building with advisers Mrs. Jane Yamashiroya and Miss Janice Kawamoto.

In September, the club assisted the registration scramble in the gym. Hanauma Bay was the site of the welcome picnic for new members held in November. In December members had a good time at a Christmas part at the Princess Kaiulani and sold kim chee and cookies at a bazaar. Along with other MHS clubs, they participated in the Christmas Song Contest Assembly.

An interschool volleyball match with Kaimuki's Korean Club took place in February along with manning the Fish and Chips booth at the McKinley carnival. The club also supported the soccer team of which many were members.

Centralized in adviser Mrs. Fely Serra's room, was the Filipino Club. The group shared cultural traditions and exchanged ideas with other schools.

Some activities included a picnic party at Ala Moana Park on Election Day in October, bowling at Kapiolani Bowl and, with the Speech Club, manning the Add-Em-Up booth at the annual McKinley carnival. President Marian Balicanta and officers Jocelyn Pascual, Evergin Dela Cruz and Francisco Biacan were this year's officers.

Wakai Nakamatachi, advised by Mrs. Nancy Odo, was organized in 1966 and means "Young People's Club." In December, members began the Christmas vacation with a picnic at Ala Moana Park. It was the first activity of the year which included many games. Ikebana (flower arrangement) lessons began in January for nine weeks. They met every Wednesday during activity period in Mrs. Meg Uehara's room with instructor Mrs. Alice Uchigaku. Professor Dennis Ogawa, from the University of Hawaii, spoke to members about Japanese-American experiences in March. He was a teacher of Ethnic Studies and the author of "Jun Ken Po," a story of Japanese-American.
