Chess - Guitar - Graphic Arts

The Black and Gold 1977

Common interests bring together musical, graphics, mental skills

Chess, Guitar, Graphic Arts

What could be termed as a quiet year for the Chess Club was not necessarily an inactive one. Throughout the year, members participated in such activities as the Oahu Chess League matches, scrimmages with other schools, and a Fool's Match at the close of the year. Advised by Mr. Emil Bruner, they promoted the game of chess, good sportsmanship and developed the character of each member.

Every Monday, the beginning class of the Guitar Club met in Miss Barbara Roger's room during activity period. The advanced class met every Wednesday, during tutorial period, with instructor Milton Kawasaki.

Enthusiastic guitarists were taught the basic fundamentals of guitar, enabling them to play the type of music they were interested in, whether it be country-western, mellow, classical, or jazz.

Advanced class members Alan Ho and David Wong performed at the "Rong Show," taking third place. Three advanced guitarists showed off their talents at the Cultural Plaza on February 12 at the Narcissus Festival.

Promoting more interest in the graphic arts field was the objective of the newly organized and charted McKinley Graphic Arts Club. The idea for a club as a classroom extension was proposed in mid-November by enthusiastic students and Mr. Charles Nakamura.

To attain a better understanding of graphic arts and other related fields, excursions were planned to various printing firms. Exploring opportunities in the job market became a big
concern.
