Swimming - Girls Basketball

The Black and Gold 1975

Swimmers Set Record Times in OIA Meets

Quantity became the only factor which thwarted the McKinley Swimmers' attempts to capture the championship this year. With a limit of three events a swimmer can enter, the Mick rally fell short in manpower rather than performance.

McKinley's outstanding team of Wane Medeiros, backstroke; Edward Yee, butterfly; Derek Gaspar, breaststroke; and Glen Yamaguchi, freestyle, stole both the Eastern OIA and the OIA 200 medley relay crown with record breaking times. The boys also claimed second in the medley at the state championships to finish fourth out of 22 teams.

The swimmers streaked through a successful preseason which was climaxed by a trip to Maui. Each excelling in their individual events, the Tigers were able to place among the top ranked swimmers in the OIA.

With only seven swimmers, the boys' team surprised many by seizing second place in overall team points at the OIA Eastern Championship Meet.

McKinley's young but determined girls team, though not as strong as their male counterparts, gained enough team points against their opponents for a respectable finish and show much promise for next year's competition.

Girls' Basketball Interest Remains Strong

With an increasing interest and involvement in sports, the girls basketball team entered a second year of extramural action. Still not sanctioned by the OIA, the Mick girls and six other public school teams prepared early in November for the annual University of Hawaii Tournament.

Added help from physical education teacher Joseph Tom enabled the Tigresses to develop their talents and learn different techniques. Practicing before and immediately after classes created a solid dedication which could carry the team to a championship in March.
