McKinley's Band

The Black and Gold 1975

'Giving is the Key to Our Music'

Composed of 270 students in three performing bands, McKinley's BAND displayed the largest group in the state. These bands included the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic I and the Symphonic II.

Band initiation took place in early November (it is usually held in February) when initiatees were dressed up in old clothes and layers of make up, and dined in the school cafeteria for all to see.

This year's band motto was "Giving is the Key to Our Music." With this in mind, the bands gave well-performed concerts at schools such as Lanakila, Washington, Lunalilo and Kawananakoa. In early February, the Wind Ensemble gave its first nighttime formal concert.

Other performances included three ROTC parades, playing for theatre group production, a tri-concert, the Parade of Bands in which all three bands participated, competition in the Hawaiian Festival of Music Band Contest and a Spring Concert.

On the basis of achievement and talent, members were chosen for the Select Band in May. Culminating all activities was a Band Banquet held in June.
