Pep Rallies

The Black and Gold 1977

Pep Rallies

Varsity pep squad sparks unity, spirit and team support

Pep rallies were a weekly Friday event during the football season and an added treat afterward for other various sports.

Special surprises were in store for students like the zany antics of the seniorettes or the presentation of the Homecoming court. Class squads were also on hand during the respective class rallies.

Held a lunch and activity periods, the pep rallies also featured members of McKinley's band who played the traditional rally favorites like "Peter Gunn" and "Horse" as well as new tunes such as "Express."

But the main component of the rallies was the 1977 varsity pep squad, composed of six song leaders, five cheerleaders, a pep chairman and a drummer.

They participated in many events such as representing the country of Brazil in the Lion's International Parade, hostessing tournaments and participating in the Hula Bowl half-time. They also promoted the carnival at Ala Moana Shopping Center and the feeder schools, went caroling at Kaiser Hospital and planned an Easter service project at Waimano Home as well as supporting all the boys' and girls' sports activities and promoting school spirit at McKinley.
