Assemblies

Homegrown, professional talent entertain MHSers

Providing students with a break from classroom learning, assemblies became an almost weekly Friday ritual. Hard work and planning by the assembly committee, advised by Mr. James Nakamoto, resulted in a wide variety and abundance of talent by both professionals and amateurs.

The first, a "Welcome Back" assembly, featured the student council members, class officers and drama students to welcome and orient old and newcomers alike.

Theatrical productions included "The Me Nobody Knows," presented by members of the Honolulu Theater for Youth, which focused upon aims and goals in life, and sneak previews of McKinley Theater Groups' versions of broadway musicals "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," "Celebration," and "Hello, Dolly."

Among the professional talent was a guest appearance by KKUA's disc jockey Kamasami Kong and the rock group "Gig," on an island-wide high school tour, and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra under the direction of assistant conductor Sidney Rothstein. Both gave McKinleyites a taste of different cultural experiences.

McKinley was not at a loss for talent; the majority of assemblies were put on by students. These included the annual Wind Ensemble I Pops Concert, an Aloha Week performance by the choir, and a song contest by clubs in December that helped the student body celebrate the coming Christmas holidays.

Especially enjoyed by students and faculty was the "Rong Show," a talent contest patterned after TV's "Gong Show." Magic, song and slapstick comedy had the audience awed at times, or howling with delight.

At year's end the annual Awards Assembly recognized outstanding students for their service and performance.
