The Bicentennial

The Black and Gold 1976

McKinley Salutes...the BICENTENNIAL

With Parade, Old-Fashioned Contests

Preparations for the McKinley salute to the Bicentennial began with the September opening aloha assembly. It was designated, then, that all further assemblies of the year would begin with the pledge of allegiance lead by Mr. McKinley John Yano.

The 1976 year was kicked off with a bicentennial parade the first week of January. Students along with the ROTC, Taikas, and Pep Squad carried flags, banners and bicentennial messages and paraded around the campus. Floats entered by the science and Chinese Student Clubs competed for the first place ribbon.

The following week, which was dedicated to the Bicentennial, included an apple pie eating contest, a fifties dress up day, a flag-search and a patriotic dress-up day. A special assembly culminated the week with the MTG performing "A Song for a New World," a play about Roger William's quest for religious freedom in the new world.

On February 20, as a tribute to the Bicentennial, the Senior Class planted a cherry tree near the band room. It was then requested that all future graduating classes would care for it.
