Leaving Yesterday Behind

The Black and Gold 1976

Leaving Yesterday Behind, We Look to the Future

As the ending of the school year approached, many McKinleyites looked back to the opening of the '75 school semester which began with a three-day scramble registration on September 3. October's celebration of Homecoming, "Tiger Heritage" included such activities as a dance, competitions, pep rallies, a bonfire and finally the game against Roosevelt. October 17 brought the selection and crowning of Waynette Gallegos as Miss McKinley.

Starting the list of activities for the Senior Class was a luau at Sea Life Park on the first of November. Fun Nite '75 included many interesting activities in the gym. A prom attire assembly helped many prepare for the upcoming winter prom, "One Love".

Early December marked the colorful beginning of the MTG production of Godspell and in the latter part, the controversial smoking bill, after passed by the School Board, was vetoed by the Governor.

A week after winter vacation, the Bicentennial Parade helped to rouse spirits and launched the year of '76. T start off their commencement activities, the seniors ordered their cap and gowns in early January. This was also the month for the celebration of Black and Gold Day, which commemorated President McKinley's birthday. Entered in the Carole Kai Bed Race, the Juniors captured 5th place honors.

The successful February carnival spearheaded by students, showed the willingness and hard work of all involved. The Science Fair and the planting of a cherry tree to honor Presidents' Day, were other noteworthy activities in February.

Featuring a square-dance troupe, the bicentennial dance was one of many events planned by the bicentennial committee. Climaxing activities of Sophomore Class Day, was the banquet "Something I'll Remember" the next night at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel.

On March 24 and April 7, the votemobile gave many seniors the opportunity to register for the coming November presidential election.

April brought the much awaited Junior Class Day and the Junior Prom which took place at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel.

Senior Class Wee, May 3-7, featured activities for each day. On May 28 came the final day of high school for seniors and their prom themed "Moments to Remember" at Princess Kaiulani's Ainahau ballroom. There the seniors had a chance to reflect on all of their schooltime remembrances before graduation.

Traditional June 6 graduation proved happy for some while very sad for others as seniors donned their caps and gowns and started new adventures into the future.
