Informal Camps to Elegant Proms--Memories...
...of the Good Times
Socials were always an important aspect of high school life as they provided those special times for students to simply get together with friends, to have a lot of fun, and ranged from the most casual to the most elegant of proms.
Allowing students to get reacquainted with old friends and meet new ones, the Welcome Dance began the long line of activities for the year. Soon thereafter came the Homecoming Dance which brought back the alumni.
Fun Night '75 treated all to hairstyling tips, cosmetic sessions, and a Liberty House Hi-board fashion show, all in preparation for the upcoming December 22 Winter Prom. This semi-formal affair themed "One Love" took place at the Ilikai Hotel's Pacific Ballroom.
The booming popularity of disco dancing drew students to two more dances in February , both part of the carnival festivities. And in March, McKinleyites observed the Bicentennial with the lively art of square dancing in the cafeteria.
Garbed in costumes from the 1700's, 17 senior couples participated in the exclusive, state-sponsored, schoolwide Colonial Ball in April. The Easter vacation also brought the newly derived "Spring Fling," an informal party for the student body.
Individual class banquets and proms also highlighted the social year. Taking a different course in formal dinners, the Senior Class banquet was replaced by a luau at the Sea Life Park. This put them in an atmosphere to "relax and enjoy" with classmates. Sophomores gathered at the Queen Kapiolani for their March banquet, "Something I'll Remember."
One April 30, the Class of '77 floated in a world of their own at their Junior Promenade at the Princess Kaiulani.
Along with the last day of school for seniors (May 28) the very formal Senior Prom was also held at the Princess Kaiulani Ainahau Ballroom.
