Activity Period

The Black and Gold 1976

Schedule Allows for Extracurricular Time

Activity period enabled students and teachers to participate in extracurricular work between classes on Tuesdays and, Thursdays and Fridays. On Mondays, it came after period 5 and benefited those who had to complete work after school.

Alternating from day to day and between classes was due to the fact that students were leaving the school campus early and not attending activities sponsored by the Student Council, class levels, and clubs in previous years.

To interest those who did not want to join in S.C. or class level activities, special courses were offered by several teachers. Slack key guitar, mah jong, tennis and sewing were some.

Class meetings, pep rallies, Student Awareness speakers, bicentennial celebrations, and club get-togethers were some of the happenings at this time. Even the Fremont (California) High School Choir and New Orleans Jazz Band entertained during this special period.

Also, for the first time this year, there were tutorial periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays after period 6, and on Wednesdays after period 1, which allowed students to make up tests and seek extra help from their respective teachers. More fortunate students who were caught up with all classwork took this time to socialize with friends or just relax. Tutorial and activity periods proved to be very rewarding for all at MHS.
