The Black and Gold 1977
The eager and willing Class of '79 entered the gymnasium for their first taste of McKinley...the scramble. Confusion only helped in adding to their feelings of nervousness in this totally new and different environment.
The sophomores' first order of business was the election of class officers, senators and grievance board members.
In October, for their first class game they had eight energetic and spirited pep squad members to help the "Super Sophs" on to victory over the Kaiser Cougars, 15-14.
Tying for first place in the Homecoming competitions, (with the seniors) involved sophomores in the spirit of McKinley. Adding to the victory, they finished a proud third place with their tapestry, "Tigers Movin' On."
In December the sophomores awaited the coming of their first Winter Prom themed "Walk Close to Me."
In the month of March the much awaited class day arrived. The Class of '79 put on their first class play and Pinion for the school and climaxed their class day with the sophomore banquet at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel.
Spirited Class of '79
As the sophomores plunged into the school year, they found themselves missing something...an identity. They had already elected the people who would represent their class, but an image was also needed. Therefore, the Special Projects Committee headed by Terilyn Inouye and Paul Lam went into action with elections.
The sophomores chose mascot Snoopy, the colors blue and white, the flower white carnation, the song "We've Only Just Begun" and the motto "Don't walk behind me, I may not lead; don't walk in front of me, I may not follow; just walk beside me and be my friend."
With this identity, the sophomores surged on to their first year at McKinley with unity and purpose.

Exhuberant soph squad leads class on to victory
The sophomores found themselves with little time and manpower to plan their class game on October 23.
In September, the sophomore pep squad quickly began rehearsing for this game.
Class game chairman Janice Morikawa designed the class ribbon and along with Tracy Mun, sewed the "Super Sophs" banner which they proudly waved at the pep rally and the game.
With the Sophomore Class backing the Tiger Team, the gridders triumph over the Kaiser Cougars 15-14, resulting in a thrilling and exciting game.
