Vocational Clubs

The Black and Gold 1977

Vocational Clubs undertake community projects

Still the only club of its kind in the Honolulu district is McKinley High School's chapter of the Future Farmers of America. The organization, advised by Mr. Glenn Saiki, had many money projects this past year because they were able to grow many plants or harvest vegetables.

With the Art Department, they helped the Ma and Pa's Country Store at the carnival, to sell cement pots and planters. Also in February the members attended the Oahu Convention at Waialua High School and the State Convention at the Kauai Resort Hotel.

In existence for six years, the Future Business Leaders of America helped to develop competent, well rounded business leaders. The club also helped to strengthen the confidence of young men and women in themselves and their work.

On October 17, club adviser Miss Barbara Takara and club members went to a picnic at Ala Moana Park hosted by Campbell's FBLA club. Officers of the club were installed at a luncheon at the Oceania Floating Restaurant on November 2. Guest speaker Ms. Joy Labez spoke on the importance of good job preparation.

Bake sales throughout the year during recess, lunch and activity period in room 102 were the Future Homemakers of America/Hero Club's main source of money making. The money was used to send every member to the annual island-wide camp and state convention.

Placing second in overall competition at their January islandwide camp at Camp Erdman showed the close unity among FHA members. They were judged on relay games, cheering and skit performing.

Topping their list of activities was the State Convention with neighbor island chapters at the Pagoda Hotel, the weekend of March 4-6. Their advisers were Mrs. Nancy Au and Mrs. Helen Ezaki.

An international organization, McKinley Junior Civitan was a club that formed this year at McKinley. Their flag is one which is flown over the United States capitol on July 13, 1976.

Advised by Mrs. Ann Bowers, the Civitans attended a luncheon at the Flamingo Chuckwagon during the Christmas holidays, sponsored by the adult Civitans, who are part of the club. In February, members made collection cans to help the Civitan/NARC Prevention campaign.

Their main purpose was getting their newly formed club together with plans for more activities in coming years. Members contributed most of their time and talents toward environmental awareness.
