The Black and Gold 1977
Environmentalists explore, enjoy natureEvery Tuesday and Thursday, Friends of the Animals, an instruction program for students, attended Honolulu Zoo to gain experience in aspects of zoo management, animal behavior, and other projects. Projects included an overnight safari at the zoo in September, participating in a Health Fair at the Cultural Plaza in December, working as stewards at a cat show in February and taking a trip to the island of Hawaii to visit its newly opened zoo in April.
Money making activities and informational meetings for interested students for the Zoo Instructor Program took place throughout the year. The adviser was Mr. Art Kimura.
Better appreciation of the ocean environment through snorkeling, scuba and sailing activities was the goal of the Scuba and Snorkeling Club.
Experiencing the beauty of our Hawaiian waters, members along with adviser Mr. John Hawkins, explored the reefs off the Hilton Hawaiian Village in September, Hanauma Bay in October and the Windward and Leeward areas in April. They were mainly interested in the types of organisms found in various areas for both ecological as well as fishing purposes.
For safety reasons, members who took up scuba diving went to Punahou for training sessions to be certified.
Keeping up with the nation's latest trend, the Amateur Radio/Electronics Club added CB
(Citizen's Band) radio sessions to their curriculum. Because of McKinley's superior radio facilities and a growing interest among students to learn how to operate radios, the club devoted most of its time in helping students obtain their amateur radio operator's licenses. The adviser of the Amateur Radio/Electronics Club was Mr. Emil Bruner.
The Sierra Club had more than its share of outdoor life with a full 1976-77 schedule. Members along with their adviser Mr. Michael Gaber, hiked to Judd Trail in September and sponsored camp-hikes to Aiea State Park, Aiea Look ridge in October, and to Kahuku in November. During the Winter vacation, the members hiked to Hidden Valley and Crouching Lion. Money making projects were held to support the club at the close of the year.
A picnic at Kapiolani Park was the first activity for the Science Club. The picnic in October welcomed the new members and old timers alike. Also in October was a plant propagation project in the hot house behind the arts building. Hiking to Manoa Falls in November and several service projects throughout the year plus the participation in the annual McKinley Carnival in February were among the interesting activities for the year. Finally, a trip to the Big Island during Easter Vacation from April 4 to 8 was an exhilarating and highlighting experience for all members and adviser, Mr. Arthur Kimura.
