Golf - Judo

The Black and Gold 1976

Mick Golfers Gain Third in OIA; Tiger Judo Champs Defend League Title

McKinley's golf team hoped to equal or better last year's record of six wins and three losses, placing third in the OIA Eastern Division.

Expectations were high because of the good turnout. The team consisted of four seniors, two juniors and two sophomores, all of which were returnees.

Outstanding golfers were seniors Bernard Beck, Steve Takahashi and junior Ken Fujii, all averaging high 70's  or low 80's. Sophomore Tim Schmidt shows much promise for next year.

The team played on such beautiful courses as Navy-Marine, Mid-Pacific, Makaha East, Kuilima, Kalakaua, Leilehua and the Oahu Country Club.

Comprised of many returnees and five starting seniors, the McKinley Judo Team attempted to defend their OIA title with experience as their key attribute. To further its strength, a prestigious addition from Farrington also joined the team.

At practices held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Beretania Police Station gym, various traditional martial arts customs were practices while also attempting to perfect various basic judo techniques, form, holds and throws.

A total of seven tournaments or "shiais" were held at Castle and Kalani and McKinley hosting its own tournament. With a tough schedule lasting from March through April, the Tigers faced Waipahu, Kalani, Aiea, Moanalua, Kaimuki, Pearl City and Roosevelt.

Co-captain Regan Yamada and John Quisano represented McKinley in the National Judo Tournament in Kent, Washington in May post-season action.
