The Black and Gold 1976
Scholastic Achievers Maintain Objectives
In candlelight ceremonies at adviser Mrs. Yun Soong Jim's home, members of the McKinley Chapter of the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY joined in an initiation of some 30 new members. As the club was based on selective membership, those inducted in NHS also found that the society promoted good fellowship and aided them in their goals for a higher education. the students strived to achieve their goals of scholarship, leadership, character and service by performing a variety of activities and projects. These included wrapping presents at Safeway, ringing bells for the Salvation Army at Ala Moana, helping at the College Fair and ushering at Kennedy Theater.
If your interests like in Mathematics, then the MATH CLUB was the organization to join. Using s and knowledge acquired in math workshops, this club represented McKinley in the monthly math competitions between public and private high schools. Every third Saturday of each month, they competed against Hawaii Baptist, Moanalua, Radford, and Kalani. In the spring, the club sponsored the Mathematics Association of America Exam at McKinley.
Developing self confidence and strong, aggressive leaders for the community was the goal of the FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA. A fine turn out of students produced an exciting year filled with activities such as a delicious luncheon at paradise Park for the installation of officers. The Christmas holidays meant carolling at Kuakini's Old Folks Home. As a money-making project, the FBLA conducted the ever popular fishpond at the McKinley carnival.
Cultivating and harvesting corn and plants were learning experiences shared by FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA. Under new advisor Mr. Glenn Saiki the boys and girls made terrariums and cement pots. Helping with the Ma and Pa's Store for the carnival, the club sold plants and cement pots. A district conference united FFA clubs around Oahu at Castle High School. A camping trip at Kahuku during the Easter vacation proved to be an enjoyable outing. Winners in the district conference went on to the State Conference held in April at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. Plants as well as the annual marigolds were sold in May.
During weekly meetings at lunch and activity periods, the FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA aided in the tutoring of TESOL (Teaching English To Speakers of Other Languages) students here at McKinley. An orientation picnic for new members and TELSOL students at Ala Moana Park in October developed rapport between members. FHAers also learned about preparation of nourishing meals for the family and home living practices. In March, the members assisted the McKinley Theater Group for "West Side Story". The club raised money through carwashes for students to go to the Big Island to represent their chapter at the state conference in April.
