Young Enthusiastic Runners, Spikers Encounter Rough Competitive Season
Rebuilding and conditioning McKinley's Cross Country Team was the major obstacle to overcome this year. With only two returning letterman on the boys' team and a first year girls' team, coach Cindy Dalrymple concentrated on developing each individual's perfect running form.
Using the steep climb of Tantulus and the undulating hills of Manoa, the harriers strenthened their endurance and speed. Training under the same coach created the unity and morale needed in each highly competitive meet.
The pre-season meets lit an inner drive within the harriers as they repeatedly took top positions.
Placing high in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Championships, the Micks qualified three harriers for the state meet on Maui, with two runners missing the qualifications cut by two places. The girls' team also performed impressively, ranking seventh in total team points.

A growing interest of the underclassmen will profit the team's output for competition next season.
Lacking the coherence needed in every young team to upset their keen contingents, the McKinley Girls' Volleyball Team stumbled through a season of anguish and disappointment.
Hit hard by graduation, Coach Jane Schroeder started early in the summer to mold her team into a unified style of play. Finding themselves as one of the shortest teams in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, the girls focused much of their practices on developing their jumping ability.
Traveling to Molokai for their pre-season action, the girls showed promise of putting together a winning season. But their victory drive was thwarted in the regular season by many close marginal defeats.
The team's performance was initiated by a strong first set pattern, but then lost their momentum in the remaining sets, yielding the game to their opponents.
Their lone triumph came toward the end of their season against Kalani. The girls attacked the Falcons with a wall-like defense while the offense accurately placed their shots.
A final loss to Castle handed the Tiger spikers a 1-7 record
