JROTC

The Black and Gold 1975

Female  Enrollment Strengthens ROTC Program

Female enrollment in the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps has increased steadily since last year. Unexplained factors added to this intrigue, but the promise of even more females in the program was greatly welcomed.

Weekly retreats took place on Wednesday afternoons as usual but a array of color was added to this year's regimented line as the girls marched forth in brand new plaid uniforms and the male officers in dress greens. The uniforms had the distinction of being the first in military history to have been issued by the United States Army.

A yearly inspection, ranging from simple scrutinizing of cadets to the surveying of adequate equipment and facilities, was conducted in March by the Inspector General.

Sabre and Chain, a club comprised of officers only, helped fellow cadets by conducting parties and social get-togethers to enlighten the regimentation of daily ROTC life.

From the pages of The Pinion, 1920-1921
The first issue of the Pinion was published on October 4, 1920. The paper was printed bi-weekly instead of daily like today, and consisted of 4 pages. Subscription rates were 5 cents per copy, or 90 cents for the whole school year, a total of 16 issues.
That year, statue-washing was done by the Citizenship Club initiates. There was also a school-wide song contest, with the sophomores taking first place.
November saw the start of what was to become the new McKinley High School. Plans were being made to begin dredging Kewalo Basin and to fill in the site where McKinley now stands.
The building of the new McKinley High School started in July of 1921, and was expected to be completed in time for second semester. the class of 1922 was the first to graduated from the new school.
Black and Gold, the school annual, was published by the senior class. The regular price of 75 cents had been raised in 1920-1921 to one dollar, due to the rising cost of printing and materials.

Pep Squad

The Black and Gold 1975

Exuberance, Spirit, Amity Aim Pep Squad to Coveted First Place

In preparation for the annual State Cheerleading Contest held at Kahala Mall, the '74-75 Varsity Pep Squad featuring six vivacious cheerleaders, five lovely songleaders, one pep chairman and two drummer boys, began practice in July.

Displaying their uniquely choreographed cheer routines with concinnity, they captured the well-deserved, coveted position of being the number one pep squad in the state. Pep squads representing various high schools throughout the island were judged on poise, choreography, and eye appeal.

For many people, summer was a time of rest, but not for the pep squad. In addition to the hours they put into practice, they worked at the 50th State Fair manning their own booth to raise funds for their September mainland trip with the football team.

The trip to San Francisco brought about many new experiences as they performed in the Galileo High School gym and at the game in freezing 40 degree weather.

Honored as the best pep squad in the state brought many responsibilities and invitations to perform at various events. They performed at the third annual Carol Kai Bed Race, a basketball tournament at the HIC, and on a local television show in April.

Selling ribbons, making rings, coaching class squads, going to various intermediate feeder schools to promote spirit, and participating in numerous pep rallies were a few of the infinite activities of this exuberant pep squad.
