Long history provides rich heritage and staunch traditions
As the oldest public school on Oahu, McKinley is rich in traditions. Among the stuanchest is Black and Gold Day, which commemorates President William McKinley's birthday on January 29.
This year the choir sang the McKinley Code of Honor at the special assembly featuring guest speaker Mr. Bob Masuda on McKinley's heritage and the introduction of new principal Mr. Herbert Imanaka to the student body for the first time.
Other traditions with long histories include commencement exercises on the front campus and refraining from walking on the oval out of respect for the president's statue.
As long as McKinley endures, here traditions will likewise last.
Carnival
13th annual carnival falls in prosperous year
McKinley High School's 13th Annual Carnival happened on the weekend of the Chinese New Year, February 18 and 19.
According to the Chinese belief, the year 1977, or year of the snake, is one of prosperity, and truly it was. With no rain clouds in sight, the carnival, which sometimes turns out in rain and mud, brought one of the bigger crowds, both young and old, in recent years.
Screams and laughter could be heard amidst the noise of the power generators, as anxious carnival goers took on scary or amusing rides such as the Sizzler, Rock-n-Roll and Ferris Wheel.
As smoke climbed to the sky, the aroma of huli-huli chicken, chili, undagi and other "ono" foods enticed the hungry.
Ma's and Pa's Country Store gave shoppers a wide variety of bargains. Ceramics, clothes and plants were some items for sale.
Another popular feature was the games tent, where the skilled or lucky could win stuffed animals, bottles of soda or various other prizes.
The success of the carnival was not only determined by its patrons, but by the many who pulled together to supply the manpower -- whether actually working at the carnival itself or taking part in scrip presale drives or donating goods for sale.
This, coupled with early planning and organization, made the 1977 carnival a prosperous one.
