The Black and Gold 1976
Homecoming Honors 'Tiger Heritage' and Alumni
In keeping with the bicentennial, the homecoming celebration was themed, "Tiger Heritage." This traditional week long festivity took place from October 19 to 24 and welcomed back McKinley's alumni.
Spirit boosters for this special game were school and night pep rallies in the gym. Exuberance and spirit characterized the student body as each class cheered enthusiastically in hope of capturing the coveted spirit stick, which went to the seniors. Following the rally was a bonfire and a dance.
Because floats could not be driven onto the field, tapestries of tissue paper flowers were substituted. Painstakingly put together to form a desired pattern, they were paraded about Aiea Field during the game half time. "Tiger Heritage, Spirit of '76," the senior tapestry captured first place honors in the judging.
All these activities led up to the much awaited homecoming game against Roosevelt. Students came brimming with excitement and pride, buttons, ribbons and balloons to cheer the team on.
Half time activities included the introduction of the court and a performance of patriotic songs by the marching band.
Though a disappointing night with a 21-0 defeat, it was the traditional pride that really made McKinleyites proud of their "Tiger Heritage."
