Language Arts

The Black and Gold 1977

Language Arts, Social Studies make up academic core

Social Studies and Language Arts were required basics, essential for graduation. But each was diversified enough to satiate students' different interests.

Social Studies courses assisted students to become knowledgeable in the social, political, or historical aspects of the world.

A variety of electives were offered besides the required American Studies. These ranged from Psychology, to Environmental Studies to Hawaiiana.

Many field trips were planned, giving students perspectives outside of the confined classroom. Some of the trips were a study of animal behavior by Psychology students at Sea Life Park in November, and an environmental walk studying urban planning by Environmental Studies classes. The movie "Return of a Man Called Horse" which portrayed the plight of the American Indian was viewed at a local theater by the American Studies classes.

The Language Arts department provided students with skills and know-how for them to develop within by offering a variety of courses.

Besides the required sophomore English IV, there were 43 elective courses from which to choose. They ranged from World Literature to Mass Media. Popular courses such as Practical English and Reading Improvement showed marked increase in enrollment this year.

Hard work and extra time necessary for handling of essay contests and scholastic awards paid off as many students who showed off their skills and abilities in English classes by entering the various contests.

Basic writing skills and overall development in reading comprehension as well as literary appreciation were foremost concerns of the Language Arts department.
