ACADEMICS

With the spirit of the Bicentennial dominant this year, many students took extra time to devote their services to all the possible celebration activities. Essay contests, debate tourneys, community festivals, and exhibits all enhanced academic studies as well as the individual.

INTERACTION

The Black and Gold 1976

INTERACTION - INTERACTION - INTERACTION

How does McKinley High School, in the city of Honolulu 200th anniversary of the American Revolution? In many ways, it was easy...the discovery of the Islands by Captain Cook in 1778 gave the islands a British attachment...the coming of the missionaries in the early 1800’s recalled the New England forefathers and the school itself had beginnings in a church. But the faces of McKinley showed decidedly different nationalities: Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Samoan and more recently Vietnamese.

Despite the obvious problems of linguistic and cultural differences, festive bicentennial activities bridged the gap between American and alien cultures. For all had come to America, just as the founding fathers had, to seek a better, happier and free life. Interaction of all these cultures with the American heritage was richly celebrated in this bicentennial year of 1976.
