Recalling Our McKinley Yesteryear

The Black and Gold 1975

Recalling the Fun and Games of Our McKinley Yesteryear...
...As People to People

Entering a new year enthusiastic and well rested, students prepared for second semester registration and the many new courses that were being offered.

McKinley flaunted its spirit as everyone wore school colors on Black and Gold Day. Students from other schools came down to visit for inter-school activities. A lei honoring the birthday of President William McKinley was draped around the front statue.

Valentine's Day ushered in the gaiety and merriment of McKinley's 11th Annual Carnival on the spacious William Wise Field. People flocked to the carnival attracted by its new ideas and old traditions, propelling it to a successful outcome.

The third MTG production, "Two Gentlemen from Verona," also a musical comedy, took place in early March. the yearly ROTC parade honoring retiring teachers and distinguished guests took place on the William Wise Field. In the middle of March, sophomores celebrated their class day with a special lunch and assembly. To highlight everything, the sophomore banquet allured everyone to an enchanting evening of dining and dancing at the Hawaiian Regent. A week before spring vacation, students had a chance to show humorous individualism and unique expressions during Crazy Week.

Along with April showers came "A Song for Someone," the Junior Promenade, culminating their class day, fascinating all who attended at the Moana Surfrider.

May Day was lei day...a Hawaiian motif graced the cafeteria as a luau, games and refreshments, fun night  complemented the May Day program held earlier in the day. Seniors held their last prom in the Kaiulani's Ainahau room. An awards assembly recognized students who were outstanding in their accomplishments or services to the school. The 1975 school year closed with an Aloha Dance, giving students a chance to bid their farewells.

After 13 years of schooling, the Class of '75, 850 strong, met all together, dressed in caps and gowns, for the final time as they went through traditional graduation exercises on the front lawn.

School was enlightened with friendly competition; people learned, shared, laughed, and experienced life with each other.

We Interact

The Black and Gold 1975

We Interact and Experience the Fullness of Life...

By the last day of school, June 9, the kaleidoscope of people at McKinley recalled with smiles and sadness the never to be forgotten events of the school year.

Sophomores were no longer green and unfamiliar with the campus, organizations, and activities. Juniors waited with anticipation the summer vacation and senior year.  Seniors brightened at the prospect of graduation and pondered the future.

The 1974-75 school year was one of academic and social progress.  Reflective of the year were the special occasions and functions that stirred students and faculty members alike.

"Friday the Thirteenth" marked the first major activity for the student body as this welcome dance welcomed everyone, new and old timers, to McKinley. Along with the dance was the Aloha Assembly, introducing our principal and Student Council Officers.

Club day, scheduled during October, encouraged everyone to involve themselves with the various organizations and clubs.  The highlight of the month was the Miss McKinley Carnival Queen contest. Out of 14 senior girls, one was chosen to represent McKinley at its events throughout the school year.

Homecoming and the SAT test for college bound students clashed as they were both held on the same day. The excitement of "Tiger Celebration" and its colorful, unique parade of floats flourished in the minds of those taking the test--making it hard to concentrate.

McKinley's theatre group worked hard on three productions, two of them, "Dracula" and "The Apple Tree" were presented before the Christmas holidays, "Dracula" made its special debut on Halloween night, a different and enjoyable treat for many. "The Apple Tree," a musical comedy, was a presentation of three combined short plays.

December, the month for proms and mistletoe balls, brought about Fall '74, an activity which produced the 1974 Winter Prom. "Our Winter World of Love" was a great success as an enchanting aura surrounded the 200 couples attending the prom. McKinley's talented band put everybody in the yuletide mood as they played Christmas songs and favorites on the front steps of the Administration Building.
