The Black and Gold 1975

Mick Matmen Post 10-3 in Title Bid

Tri-captains Brian Tamanaha, Edmund Lum, Edward Fujioka and Head Coach Calvin Nomiyama guided the Tiger grapplers to another successful wrestling season.  It looked good for the matmen as they began their season heading for a possible championship in 1974-75. But high hopes and dreams were cut short by injuries.

Their season started off on a winning note against Waipahu which gave them confidence in preparing for upcoming matches. They easily passed by Castle, Kaiser and Pearl City. But Radford proved to be a fatal adversary by defeating them convincingly. This loss provoked the Micks to polish up on their tactics which lead to a win over Kailua.

But hopes were too high as shown by straight losses to Kaimuki and Farrington. The suffering grapplers paid for their defeats and made no other choice but to put their all into the rest of the season -- beating their last four contenders, Kalani, Waialua, Campbell and Kahuku.

Their season record ended with a respectable 10-3 over all. Due to misfourtunes, the Tigers placed 5th in the OIA Tournament and went on to the State Tourney on March 14.
Coach Calvin Nomiyama can count on a fresh and young team next year as a lot of seniors will be leaving.
