Carnival

The Black and Gold 1976

Students Take On Major Responsibilities

What would have been traditionally an omnious day, Friday the thirteenth of February, instead signaled the beginning of the successful 12th annual McKinley Carnival. This year there was much controversy over whether McKinley should even have a carnival - many students were apathetic, teachers were not expected to put in the extra time and parental help was untapped. However, a determined committee of faculty and students, parents and alumni combined efforts to put together the carnival. The faculty did not favor a carnival due to the short time (planning began just before Christmas). The Coordinating Committee and the administration decided that the carnival could go on if adult and student chairmen could be found for all the committees.

Carnival goers enjoyed the usual Wally Yee rides with the addition of The Sizzler. Other tried their luck at the game booths. Offering such foods as hamburgers, saimin, undagi, chicken and Korean plate, food concessions fed the hungry, worn carnival goers. Teenagers went to the dances each night and danced to the sounds of Fres and Live Wire.

A special attraction was a salute to the Bicentennial. During the various hours of the day there were nostalgic contests that typified early American pastimes including grease pole climbing, pig calling, nail driving and gunny-sacking.

A play for the younger generations, "I Like the Sound of America" was presented by the McKinley Theater Group.
