Sports

The Black and Gold 1976

Whether it was through supporting or participating, sports played an important role in the daily
life of McKinleyites.

With fourteen Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) sanctioned sports, the athletic program
offered a variety of sports to meet individual interests and skills.

A Tiger athlete dedicated himself to long hours of rigorous training and practice. He gained
personal satisfaction and confidence as he did his utmost to represent McKinley.

Publication Staffs

The Black and Gold 1976

Publications Staffs Accept Challenge of Journalism

From reading the logo, "THE DAILY PINION," one may have wondered about the word "Daily." But daily it was, as a staff comprised of four editors, a bunch of industrious students and a devoted adviser worked in room 152 attempting to inform the students of McKinley. Accepting the challenge of journalism, students gave up their tutorial time, activity period and even lunch periods to meet daily deadlines. In an extra effort to produce an informative yet enjoyable paper, special layouts ranged from coverage of various sports, course descriptions and the Bicentennial.

But the make-up of the paper was only half of the story. Daily at about 1 p.m., the layouts went to Mr. Charles Nakamura, and his graphics arts students undertook the job of printing the paper. It was then ready for the following morning.

A meeting of minds, interchanging of ideas and plain creativity resulted in the production of the BLACK AND GOLD. In early September, the inexperienced staff set out to learn the trade, and with the leadership of one eager editor and adviser, the staff began work in late October. Drawing layouts, hunting for pictures and writing copy became routine for those in publications. Working earnestly to meet deadlines, some members made it a full week's job as they came in on Saturdays and Sundays.

Top yearbook and newspapers staffers were elected to QUILL AND SCROLL, the International Honor Society for High School Journalists. These students carried the responsibility of seeing that the Pinion and Black and Gold maintained high journalistic standards.
