Exact Science, Exercise Develop Minds

The Black and Gold 1976

Exact Science Exercise, Develop Minds

Increasing computerization and technology in our present day society motivated many students to acquire and understanding and application of mathematical and scientific principles.

With increasing enrollment, the Science Department scheduled various co-curricular activities to make students more aware of their environment.

These activities varied as they pertained to the field for which the students registered-either biological, physical or even oceanographical.

Many biology students spent a cold night in November on an overnight "zoo safari" at the Honolulu Zoo to observe nocturnal behavior of animals.

In January, physics students launched homemade rockets on the William Wise field. From these launches, the students calculated the altitude and velocity of the rockets.

A weekend camp took place at Kualoa for oceanography students to conduct a 24-hour research on the charging environment of the camp site.

The Coast Guard and Hawaii Yacht Club donated two boats for use by the oceanography students.

Teaching basic and advanced arithmatical skills, the Mathematics Department focused on learning material to apply thinking and everyday logic in solving problems.

Automation keyed math enthusiasts, as the enrollment of the computer math courses increased each year.

Courses included General Math, Algebra I-V, Unified Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus and Computer Math.

English, Social Studies

The Black and Gold 1976

English, Social Studies Encompass Basics, Electives

Equipping students with the knowledge, experience and skills of each course, the English and Social Studies program offered a variety of courses to develop individual ability and awareness.

Aside from the required English IV for sophomores, upperclassmen were strongly recommended to take a t least one course in literature and writing. Those who followed this recommendation were not limited in course selections. Literature and writing courses ranged from Polynesian Literature to Creative Writing to Short Story and Novels.

Utilizing the knowledge and skills achieved in each course, many students participated in the Bicentennial Essay Contest and the Bicentennial Youth Debate activities.

Due to the increasing popularity of the Psychology and Sociology classes, new course offerings were introduced by the Social Studies Department this year.

Psychology C offered application of the knowledge which was attained from previous psychology classes. During one class period per week, the psych students conducted field work, helping problem pupils from Washington Intermediate School.

Sociology B, an extension of the one-semester Sociology, offered a deeper study of group behavior.

Excursions were planned to enrich class instruction. Hawaiiana classes ventured to Waiahole Valley to study the pressing problems of the Waiahole-Waikane eviction by developer Joe Pao. Visiting Waimano Home was a stimulating experience for psychology students.
