Faculty

The Black and Gold 1975

In an effort to establish a good teacher-administration relationship, coordinating committees were set up by new principal Mr. Young Yee Ko to alter many policies.

Committee members included the vice principals, registrar, counselors, department heads and the principal sought ways to improve communication and set up definite policies. An important line of communication was established in which teachers talked over their concerns with department heads who, in turn, discussed them with the coordinating committee members.

Teachers made up subcommittees that investigated registration, attendance, disbursement of carnival funds, class schedules, unwritten rules and regulations, activities and school policies. Teachers were also kept busy advising classes, clubs, and organizations, sharing knowledge along the way with them

Expanding their constitutions to include more staff members, the MHS Teachers Association (MTA) was active, planning social and fun activities to enhance school life. They had an aloha committee; new and student teachers received leis, and cards and flowers were sent to the sick from the MTA. Other activities included outings, dinners, a carnival project and the annual picnic.

Administration

The Black and Gold 1975

Administering the functions of a large high school with a student population of over 2,400 can prove to be a tough challenge for anyone. Mr. Young Yee Ko returned to his Alma Mater as principal, replacing Mr. Edmund Toma, who left on a year's leave to manage George Ariyoshi's successful campaign for Governor.

His first meeting with the student body took place the first week of school in a hurriedly called assembly at which he had to discuss the death of a student following a campus fight.

In an effort to increase communication between his administration and the rest of the school, Mr. Ko encouraged a dialogue between himself and the students and teachers of McKinley High School by setting up a coordinating committee which met weekly.

Aiding him in his period of assimilation and adjustment were First Vice Principal Loy Fook Leu and Second Vice Principal Hideyasu Fukuhara. These two men helped in running the school by performing functions ranging from administration paperwork to regulating parking decals.
In addition to the principal and vice principals, the counselors at McKinley played an important role by counseling and advising students on courses to take and by helping them to achieve their goals whether it be academic or vocational.

Guidance Counselor Gerald Miller returned from his sabbatical leave. In December, Counselor Walter Nozoe accepted a vice principal position at Nanakuli High, and physical education teacher Herbert Moriyama took his place.
