Boys Track

The Black and Gold 1975

Cindermen Develop Track Stamina

Only the most devoted and mentally as well as physically strong survived the constant drilling and conditioning involved in obtaining necessary track stamina.

A change in coaching staff affected the team's format as Coach Herbert Moriyama engaged the help of several graduates to assist as coaches. Kwan Young and Bernard Yuen coached the distance runners while Van Tomokiyo and Leighton Hirata helped the hurdlers. Neil Yamamoto trained the weightman and Jon Sakurada instructed the pole vaulters.

Many of last year's Honolulu District Championship lettermen did not return this year to compete, which left an entirely young team.

The cindermen developed very competitive spring and hurdle teams. Placing on top at the Kailua relays, the Tigers created an ever-looming threat to their contingents.

JV Baseball - Girls Track

The Black and Gold 1975

Jayvees Rank Second in OIA East Baseball

Talent and experience plus persistence were the components which directed the Junior Varsity Baseball Team to its 9-4 record for the 1975 season and a second-place standing in the OIA East Honolulu District.

With many returnees, first-year JV Head coach Ronald Kishimoto observed with satisfaction the improvements in the performance of the players.

The season opened with two straight losses, but the Tigers then continued on a seven-game winning streak, even beating earlier encounters Roosevelt and Kaiser, before dropping games to Kailua and Kaimuki.

The lack of wholeheartedness caused the jayvees to lose crucial games, such as the 1-0 loss to OIA champion Kaimuki.

Contrary to the season's start, the junior sluggers ended the season on winning notes by scoring victories over Kalani and Farrington.

Young Track Recruits Reveal Hidden Potential

After an initial year of nervousness and instability, the girls' track team seemed to have gained tremendous experience. But a turnover of coaching staff just prior to their season and an unexpected number of new recruits hampered the Tigers in their second year of competition.

Last year's Assistant Coach Tom Marks became the head coach this season with physical education teacher Jane Schroder assisting.

Surprising performances against their tough competitors created strong indications of hidden potential. With six returning tracksters leading the pack, the girls looked forward to entering the Punahou Relays and the OIA Championships.
