Soccer

The Black and Gold 1975

Tigers Add Finesse in Landing Third Straight OIA Soccer Title, Rate Second in State

Speed and agility made up for the Tiger's lack of height as the McKinley Soccer Team cut out an 11-1 record and captured the OIA Championship for the third consecutive year.

With many experienced foreign born players, the Tigers held a slight advantage over their opponents. They produced an excellent forward line and several tough defensive backs.
A 4-1 stomping of Kalani in the season opener forecasted the Tiger threat as they continued their victory trail to a 1-0 squeezer over Kaimuki for the title. Leilehua was the only team who succeeded in avenging a first round Tiger defeat handing McKinley their only loss.

The second seeded Tigers simply outmaneuvered the Buff and Blues in the State playoff game. McKinley's swiftness and expertise stymied Punahou as the Micks keyed in on two Pun errors.

Punahou dominated in the first few minutes of the semifinals match keeping the ball in McKinley territory. But a misjudged kick slipped through the Pun defense line and in for a score. A final goal in the second half sealed the Mick victory.

But the Tiger machine could not penetrate a strong Red Raider defense in the championship battle. Iolani concentrated on their defensive pressure while capitalizing on two Tiger errors to sew up their second state title.

McKinley dominated the OIA All Star team by landing fullback Hung Choe, halfback Kiun Kim and forwards Phi Ratanasamay and Wayne Kim. Ratanasamay was also the OIA's second leading scorer.

JV Basketball and Wrestling

The Black and Gold 1975

Improved JV Cagers alter Record

Trying to alter McKinley's losing basketball past, the junior varsity squad succeeded in posting a very impressive 6-8 mark, the best in several years.

Under the direction of first year head coach Alvin Tokuda with assistants Lorin Lee and Dexter Nakaji, the cagers arduously drilled on expertised ball control and consistent accuracy.

The Tigers slipped by Roosevelt in their two encounters and gave each opponent a difficult time before yielding the game. Hopefully this season was the start of a new trend in basketball competition at McKinley.

Dedication Marks JV Grapplers

The junior grapplers displayeda lot of untried talent in their quest for a second straight OIA championship but fell short with a 8-1 final season record.

The team easily romped over Waipahu 47-17 in a season opener, following two lose matches against Castle and Kaiser. The team's momentum continued with an overwhelming victory over Pearl City. Confidence gained from these matches seemed to be of no value in the mid season contest with Radford. The wrestlers came back in full force to sweep the last 4 mat matches withouta any problems.

The OIA post season tourney allowed a second opportunity to shake Radford from the top. But the Rams refused to budge and the Micks were left with an unchallenged second place.
