Strong offense; defense guide Cubs through tough competition

Jayvee Football

McKinley's jayvee football teams consistently sport good records, and this year was no exception. Although they failed to keep the Honolulu District title, new coach Leo Perreira found some talent in the almost all-new team.

The Cubs opened up the '76 season with a squeeze victory over Mililani, 8-6. A two-point conversion gave the Tigers their first win. However, one week later, McKinley fell to their first loss, 13-0 because of Kahuku's fantastic ball handling.

Another two-point conversion pushed the Tigers over Campbell, 15-14. After McKinley took a 15-0 lead, Campbell scored two touchdowns in the final half to pull within one.

Interceptions and penalties did in Kaimuki as the Cubs shut out the Bulldogs 26-0. This game moved them into second place with a 3-1 record.

However, at the next game, the Micks traveled to Roosevelt only to be shut out, 13-0. Offside penalties killed the Tiger's chance and threw them into a three-way tie for second place with the Rough Riders and the Governors.

Excellent teamwork and determination carried McKinley to a 21-0 victory over Farrington. The game was highlighted by an 80-yard TD run by Guy Aleka. Kaiser gained the Honolulu District title as they crushed the cubs 30-6. Kaiser ended up with an 8-0 record while McKinley trounced Kalani in their final game 27-0 to give them a 5-3 record.

Tigers and new coach unite, bring winning grid season in '76

Varsity Football

It was a year of accomplishment as well as frustration for the Tigers' varsity football team. After losing the season opener to Kailua 37-14, the Tigers took the next week off filled with controversy. Different philosophy in coaching in the athletic department ended in the resignation of head coach Howard Gay.

Because of the controversy, ex JV head coach Mike Marq
ues was assigned by Principal Y.Y. Ko to take over as new head coach.

Week after week, the Tigers improved. After first whipping Kalani 45-6, the Tigers showed their support for coach Marques. Although losing to central powerhouse Leilehua 34-12, they came back to beat Nanakuli and Kaimuki by identical 14-0 scores.

Although two touchdowns were called back during the game against Kaiser, the Tigers still prevailed, to win over the Cougars. A last minute touchdown gave the Tigers a 15-14 edge.

With McKinley still in contention for the District title, the Micks went into the Roosevelt game with two options. Losing to Roosevelt would mean the district title would
automatically go to the Rough Riders. However, winning would throw the Honolulu district in a three way tie. With only one week left in the season, the Tigers rolled over Roosevelt 24-15.

The season's final game was disastrous, with Farrington taking not only the game, but the district title from McKinley with a 95 yard run in the last three minutes of the game to win 12-7.

SPORTS

Sports play a major part in the lives of many high school students. In 1976 and 1977, athletic events at McKinley gave the students thrills and excitement that made McKinley a school to be proud of.

The Fall and Spring sports gave one of the best showings ever and have produced good individual prospects.

For many of the teams, the focus was on rebuilding and developing. Winning was the ultimate

The Black and Gold 1977

Staffs produce distinctive works

The Daily Pinion

As one of only five high school daily papers in the nation, 46 devoted and hardworking students, and editorial staff and a dedicated adviser strove to meet deadlines of THE DAILY PINION.

The Pinion kept students as well as teachers informed of what was going on around the school.  Staff members were seen rushing to places to get a story or to take pictures of interesting happenings at McKinley. When stories were turned in they had to be corrected and typed; pictures had to be printed and cropped, headlines written and printed, and last minute corrections made before sending the paper over to the shop for printing.

Trying to achieve perfection while at the same time meet seemingly ever present deadlines was the main objective of THE BLACK AND GOLD staff for  1976-77.

With only four experienced returnees from the previous year, the staff utilized their utmost in creativity to design and execute each of the 224 individual pages that makes up the yearbook.

Previous annuals and those exchanged with other schools served as guidelines, but not as an actual mold for the 1977 BLACK AND GOLD. This year's goal was to include more graphic design and effects to keep up with the contemporary style of today's magazines.

QUILL AND SCROLL, an international honorary society for high school journalists selected students who have devoted much time and work to the paper and yearbook. Quill and Scroll members must be in the top third of their class or have a 2.8 grade average, and a minimum of two years experience in newswriting or yearbook.

Members evaluate and critique the Daily Pinion and also maintain and uphold scholastic journalism standards. Like most clubs on campus, they worked at the carnival an honored senior
members at their banquet in May.
