The Black and Gold 1977
Classes - Supplementary activities enrich curriculum
Classroom activities made up the largest part of a typical day for all students at McKinley. As in the previous year, the school utilized an alternating 1-3-5 periods schedule on Mondays and Wednesdays, and 2-4-6 periods on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with all periods on Fridays.
To enrich or supplement the 90 minutes of class time, teachers improvised different teaching methods. Among them were individual research, group discussions and field trips where learning extended beyond the classroom.
Guest speakers or supplemental visual aids such as films and filmstrips also served as an alternative to the regular classroom lectures.
Offering the largest selection of electives of any high school on Oahu, students could choose fields ranging from Home Economics to Industrial Arts, from Publications to Agricultural Technology; a course was available to suite just about everyone.
Awards - Achievements gain individual recognition
Throughout the school year, members of McKinley's student body won recognition or awards for scholastic and personal achievement.
Ten creative and talented art students won awards in the 1977 Scholastic Art Contest, Hawaii region. Their winning entries were on display at Ala Moana Shopping Center and later competed for national awards in New York.
