INTERACTION

The Black and Gold 1976

INTERACTION - INTERACTION - INTERACTION

How does McKinley High School, in the city of Honolulu 200th anniversary of the American Revolution? In many ways, it was easy...the discovery of the Islands by Captain Cook in 1778 gave the islands a British attachment...the coming of the missionaries in the early 1800’s recalled the New England forefathers and the school itself had beginnings in a church. But the faces of McKinley showed decidedly different nationalities: Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Samoan and more recently Vietnamese.

Despite the obvious problems of linguistic and cultural differences, festive bicentennial activities bridged the gap between American and alien cultures. For all had come to America, just as the founding fathers had, to seek a better, happier and free life. Interaction of all these cultures with the American heritage was richly celebrated in this bicentennial year of 1976.

The Black and Gold 1976

Sophomores Mold Into Cohesive Unit

Not totally unaccustomed to the environment of McKinley High School, 839 sophomores underwent orientation in August to become familiarized with scramble registration held during the first week of September.

Eager sophomores soon conducted their first election which resulted in two girls and two girls and two boys to lead the class. Along with a new adviser, the sophomore council began to mold the class into one cohesive unit.

As for activities, kicking the year off was the Love's Bread Bag Contest. A contribution of 600 bread bags were collected, adding $6 to their treasury.

Homecoming neared, which meant the production of colorful paper tissue flowers for their tapestry. Efforts were rewarded with fourth place in the contest. The class game against Kalani proved a happy occasion as the football team triumphed over the Falcons 27-7.

Class Day brought the sophomores together on March 5. The festivities were climaxed with "Something I'll Remember," class banquet a the Queen Kapiolani Hotel the following night.

Class Motto: "Remembering is yesterday, believing is today and dreaming is tomorow."
Class Colors: Burgundy and White
